I preface these remarks by providing a background on my political thought and economic philosophy:

I am a libertarian, a Constitutionalist, a Jeffersonian Democrat and a Jacksonian Republican, an Austrian economist, a Bill of Rights patriot, and a free-thinking, independent individual who will not tread on you and therefore, asks that you don’t tread on me.

I subscribe to this quote: A libertarian is someone who wants the government to keep its nose out of his business and its hand out of his pocket.

I oppose statism, socialism, and fascism. I fear the increasing intrusion of the United States government into my life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

Yes folks, I am one of those guys.

I own guns, gold, gas, and goods and like a good Boy Scout, I am prepared.

The Hawaiian:

With that introduction, I offer comment on President Obama’s State of the Union address (actually a long and boring bully pulpit sermon) and his subsequent press conference with the Republican caucus two days later.

One thing we have learned since his inauguration little more than a year ago: Although a very effective orator when reading from a script, the Hawaiian does not present well in spontaneous situations and is not the second coming of The Great Communicator. In fact he apparently cannot speak publicly to children without assistance from the Presidential podium and two tele-prompters. Take a look at Jon Stewart’s usual bang-on segment from a recent Daily Show: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-january-25-2010/obama-speaks-to-a-sixth-grade-classroom

But enough of that, let’s get to the task at hand.

Prior to the speech, many pundits and political mavens expected Obama and his executive branch to accept some blame for the financial and fiscal mess that we have experienced for the past two years, the on-going rampant unemployment, and the lack of progress on his economic initiatives.

Many ordinary Americans had hoped for a softening of the rhetoric that places all culpability for our current economic woes on Lil’ Bush and Congressional Republicans.

Instead the Hawaiian continually placed all fault on the past administration and pointed the finger repeatedly at current Congressional lawmakers. He refused to admit to any specific mistake or wrong-doing in the past 12 months.

We learned on Wednesday night that this is a very stubborn man who has an agenda and that he will not waver on his mission to impose European-style socialism on America. This is despite overall disapproval of his policies by a majority of the citizenry.

He continues to offer a socio-economic platform of government-mandated health care, cap and trade, huge budget deficits, massive taxpayer subsidies for non-economic clean energy initiatives, and vastly increased educational spending.

Bill King astutely pointed out in his daily missive on Thursday, “If education created jobs, the USSR would not have disappeared.” There are now millions of twenty-something Americans with useless college degrees who can find work only in the low-paying American service industry.

We all know that entrepreneurial small business is what creates jobs in the United States of America. The Hawaiian evidently has forgotten or chooses to ignore this fact. The scraps, gristle, and bone he proposes to throw to small business in the upcoming federal budget are simply laughable.

The Congress:

In my opinion, the Hawaiian’s refusal to compromise his unpopular socio-economic agenda will be political suicide.

Witness the convincing win of Republican Scott Brown over a Democrat career politician in Teddy Kennedy’s vacated Senate seat. Massachusetts is arguably the most liberal state in the Union and a place where Dems outnumber Reps by 3:1. They elected an avowed economic conservative.

With the win, Republicrats can now filibuster to their hearts’ content in the Senate and kill any liberal overspending bill if they so choose. And the Dempublicans are extremely worried about the midterm 2010 elections as well they should be. Obvious targets in the cross-hairs for conservatives are socialistic Senators Harry Reid of Nevada and Barbara Boxer of California.

But the opposition party should not take this as a mandate that their version of big government is viewed any more favorably by ordinary Americans. Congress has a much worse approval rating than Obama.

We the People are simply fed up with Washington, D.C., a socialistic, warmongering President, a bloated bureaucracy, a Parliament of Whores controlled by deep-pocketed corporate lobbyists, and renegade liberal judges who are beholden to their litigious brotherhood for their livelihoods.

The Tea Party:

Last April in a panel discussion at the Chicago Resource Expo, I was asked about our nation’s future path under Obama. I boldly predicted that he would be a one-term President (and added, so would have McCain) and the Democrats would lose control of Congress this November.

Both of those opinions are yet to be tested. Obama has three more years in office. The Grand Old Party must gain 10 Senators and/or 40 Representatives to break up the current donkey monopoly. That is a huge task.

But there is a big wild card in play called the Tea Party. It remains to be seen how this mainstream, grassroots, anti-government movement will impact American politics. If the Republican Party embraces Tea Party concepts of limited government and fewer taxes, they could wreck havoc on Democrats in the November elections. At the very least this middle class revolution will require that Republican candidates be economically conservative enough to gain libertarian votes in their individual elections.

The Tea Party could actually help Democrats win seats where moderate and liberal Republican incumbents currently reside. This happened in 1992 when 3rd Party candidate Ross Perot split the right of center and independent vote and led to Billary’s win over Big Bush.

An example could be conservative J.D. Hayworth’s challenge of John McCain’s Senate seat in Arizona. The primary could fragment Republicans and move centrist independents to vote for the Democratic candidate in the general election.

The Tri-Athlete:

I now introduce you to a man who is one of my heroes: Gary Johnson. If you are a libertarian, you know who he is. Gary is an ex-Governor of New Mexico (1995-2003) who as a political novice ran on a libertarian platform as a Republican. He easily won two terms against entrenched Democratic patrones in a state where Republicans are outnumbered 2:1. Gary is a lifelong libertarian, wealthy self-made businessman, ex-tri-athlete, and amateur climber who has conquered Kilimanjaro and Mt. Everest.

During his governorship, Johnson was hugely popular among conservatives who constitute the majority of our wide-open Western state. In addition to drastically cutting taxes, eliminating budget deficits, and wielding the veto pen 750 times to cut wasteful spending, he instituted populist policies and encouraged citizens to speak out on government’s problems and shortcomings.

In fact, Gary reserved every other Wednesday afternoon to personally meet with the people of New Mexico. Any citizen could schedule a five minute private appointment to sit down and discuss a State issue with the Governor.

His open door policy is in stark opposition to our present Governor, career politician Bill Richardson. You likely know who he is, too. After graduating from college, Richardson was first an aide in legislative and executive branch offices and has been a Congressman, United Nations Ambassador, Secretary of Energy, and Governor. Big Bill has collected a paycheck from one form of government or another for nearly his entire professional life.

A year ago Richardson was nominated as Secretary of Commerce by the Obama Administration but withdrew when it was revealed that he was under investigation by the United States Justice Department for his role in kickbacks from investment funds to close associates in the New Mexico State Investment Office. Subsequently, Governor Richardson was implicated in another “pay to play” scheme but has not been indicted and remains in office.

I elaborate on the essential contrast between our former and our current governors with an anecdote:

A junior resource company CEO, who shall remain unnamed, requested a meeting in 2008 with the Governor to address the administration’s ambiguous public position on an important mining issue. Note that New Mexico is a big mining state and garners a bounty of royalties and taxes from petroleum, coal, copper, potash, molybdenum, and industrial mineral production. It was the world’s largest producer of uranium until the Three-Mile Island fiasco destroyed the country’s uranium mining industry in the early 1980s.

Mr. Richardson informed the company that he would take that meeting if and only if a substantial contribution was made to his standing political action committee. The payment was made and the meeting was held in 2009.

That’s about enough of a corrupt career politico. Let’s talk about an honest man who thinks government should be by the people and for the people.

Gary Johnson has not announced his intentions in 2012 but all evidence indicates that he will run for President. He recently launched a website that promulgates his views on various issues important to libertarians including lowering taxes and cutting government spending. Gary is currently on a nationwide speaking tour that launched in New Hampshire last week, goes to the West Coast this week, and includes a stop in Washington D.C. in mid-February.

In my opinion, Gary Johnson is the man to succeed Congressman Dr. Ron Paul as a viable libertarian candidate for President. He, like Dr. Paul, will likely run as a Republican.

I will be a staunch supporter and contributor.

Please visit Gary Johnson’s website, Our America: The Gary Johnson Initiative, and see if his political views are compatible with yours. I think he is the future face of hope, individualism, freedom, and liberty for America.

And as always: Be prepared.
